The game has two modes, the first being the typical conquest main mode. It is a game that rewards (expects) patience. Minutes will turn to hours as your careful plans creep slowly toward fruition, through menu-driven management and static images for the most part. Enjoyment from these games is derived from myriad simple systems and a deep roster of historical characters combining to create a complex experience. It's worth noting, compared to most any other game on offer these days, RTK's pace is very slow. Those familiar with Paradox's offerings, Total War, or the later Nobunaga's Ambition games will make the easiest transition. RTKXIII represents a welcome modernization of the game formulas, streamlining most aspects of play compared to its predecessors, and bringing the game in line with other grand strategy games. It was a time of great tragedy, great historical figures, and later myth. This period in history (and the novel on which it's based) are rife with turmoil and political struggle, and thus make an excellent backdrop for warfare simulation. Like the other RTK games, along with Dynasty Warriors and Dynasty Tactics, RTKXIII recounts the stories of the novel of the same name: a fictional retelling of the fall of the Han Dynasty. It's a solid entry in the series, and as of now the single best grand strategy offering on PS4. If you are like-minded, you'll like this game too.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms games will always have a special place in my heart, because I am a fan of console games, grand strategy, and the historical period in question.
